Our students explored prehistory with their own hands

Prehistory is often learned at school through textbooks, pictures and notes in exercise books. This time, our students had the chance to experience it in a completely different way. They visited Historypark in Ledčice, where history became a practical experience full of discovery, creativity and thinking.

Historypark in Ledčice is a place that brings prehistory closer to children through real activities. Our students were not just listeners. They became researchers, craftspeople and explorers themselves. They tried working with grain, grinding it between millstones and sifting flour. They discovered how much effort it once took to prepare ingredients for simple baking and how differently people used to experience everyday work.

Prehistoric crafts were also a great part of the experience. The students drilled into wood, bone and stone using a replica of a prehistoric drill. Through this activity, they could understand how demanding it was to create even a seemingly simple tool. They also tried working with textiles and attempted to make a sharp blade by grinding stone.

The programme also included the discovery of artefacts. With small hoes and modern metal detectors, the students experienced the excitement of real archaeological work. Each find became an opportunity for questions, discussion and a better understanding of how archaeologists piece together the story of the past.

The whole day showed how meaningful experiential learning can be. When children can try things for themselves, they understand the context more deeply and build a more personal connection to the topic. History stops being just text in a textbook and becomes an experience they can truly grasp.

The visit to Historypark in Ledčice was a wonderful example of how learning can take place beyond the classroom. We would like to thank the whole Historypark team for an inspiring programme that allowed our students to experience prehistory in a truly memorable way.
