Bilingual environment as a natural part of the school
Fostra Elementary offers a natural Czech-English environment where it is easy for students to learn a second language. As part of our educational program, half of the subjects are taught by native speakers in English.
The key element of bilingualism is that children acquire the language through lessons, communication with peers, and natural, spontaneous activities.
English is also used for after-school care, school performances, project-based learning, workshops such as reading workshops, and cross-grade collaboration, which provides continuous language development beyond regular classes.
The school's bilingualism is also reflected in communication with parents in either Czech or English, including tripartite meetings that partially replace parent-teacher conferences, and issuing reports in both Czech and English.
Our primary school is designed for children who already speak Czech or English, as well as foreign students with English proficiency who are willing to learn Czech. The level of English proficiency is assessed individually, and if necessary, we offer tutoring in both English and Czech. The key is for students to be able to communicate, understand, comprehend, and complete tasks in class.
We ensure a safe environment for your child.
We focus on the prevention of undesirable phenomena (bullying) and habits (unhealthy addictions). We ensure that the school's premises are well-secured and that children are safe throughout the entire school day.
teachers at Fostra Elementary always act with the goal of maximizing the students' well-being. We treat each student as an individual and work with them according to their needs. This approach helps the child feel respected and supported, creating psychological safety within the school.
We develop and support each child.
We focus on developing the potential of each child. Every child is unique. By fostering their potential, we provide a stimulating environment and opportunities for growth in all areas of their life – academic, emotional, social, and physical.
We help each child discover and develop their strengths and interests, support their curiosity and creativity, and teach them the skills they need to fulfill their potential and achieve success in life.
Respect for every child means honoring and understanding the differences and uniqueness of each individual. School is not, and cannot be, a one-size-fits-all approach – every student has their own goals, pace, and varying levels of support. Therefore, understanding the developmental needs of the child is the school's primary task, and we always look for what is best for them. Teaching should be gentle yet firm, non-violent but kind.
Children have an innate desire to explore the world, discover new things, and learn from experience. We aim to keep our students engaged, motivated, and immersed in learning that flows naturally. A 45-minute lesson is not enough, and no one wants to leave school after class. Wonder, inquiry, questions, and even mistakes are welcomed and push us forward together. The child is an active participant in their own development.
Each class has three teachers (a Czech teacher for Czech subjects, a native English speaker teaching subjects in English, and an assistant who helps students engage in the lessons and manage the learning demands). To support the students, a teaching assistant is present in the classroom, co-teaching alongside the teacher, helping with the second language, and participating in the overall running of the lessons, both in and out of school. This creates ideal conditions for an individualized approach to each student.
We prepare children for life in the 21st century.
Skills for the 21st century are essential for the modern world – digital literacy, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and the ability to adapt to rapid changes.
We guide students towards a responsible approach to society, the environment, and lifelong learning.
We lead children towards responsible independence. We teach practical life skills and provide students with a safe environment where they can make mistakes and learn from them. We set clear boundaries and rules while also supporting children's autonomy to make decisions and solve problems independently. We guide them to take responsibility for their behavior and understand the need to face consequences. We encourage them to believe in their abilities, set their own goals, plan their work, think critically, and apply their judgment.
